Growth and reproduction of an estuarine population of the colonial hydroidCordylophora caspia (Pallas) in the northern Baltic Sea

Growth and reproduction of the colonial hydroidCordylophora caspia were monitored during the breeding season in natural conditions. In 1987, a life history study was carried out on the upright stems of the main stolon. Mean size of uprights varied cyclically. The first peak coincided with the peak number of sexual hydranths, after which the mean upright length decreased, possibly indicating somatic costs of sexual reproduction. Extrinsic factors like flooding may also have contributed to cyclical changes in upright size. In 1988 and 1989, colonies were reared on experimental plates in the estuary. In 1988, colonies grew until mid July, after which they regressed to a dormant condition and then started growing again in mid August. Predation and space competition are discussed as possible causes for this dormancy in the middle of the growing season. In 1989, colonies grew continually, with the exception of a decline in colony biomass and number of feeding hydranths at the end of July, just following the peak of sexual reproduction. Sexual reproduction started in the early stages of colonial development for all years. During early summer,C. caspia allocated resources simultaneously in colonial growth and sexual reproduction. However, sexual reproduction had a clear peak in mid summer, and thereafter sexual reproduction ceased while colonial growth continued.     

malvolio, the Drosophila homologue of mouse NRAMP-1 (Bcg), is expressed in macrophages and in the nervous system and is required for normal taste behaviour.

We report the sequence, expression pattern and mutant phenotype of malvolio (mvl), the Drosophila homologue of mammalian natural resistance-associated macrophage proteins (NRAMPs). In the mouse, this novel transporter is encoded by Bcg, a dominant gene that confers natural resistance to intracellular parasites. mvl was identified in a screen for mutants that affect taste behaviour. We show that loss-of-function as well as insertional mutants in mvl display defects in taste behaviour with no alterations in the physiology of the sensory neurons. Activity of the reporter enzyme beta-galactosidase, that reflects the expression pattern of mvl, is seen in mature sensory neurons and in macrophages. The conceptual translation of the mvl cDNA shows a striking similarity (65% identity) with human NRAMP with almost complete identity in a conserved consensus motif found in a number of ATP-coupled transporters. Based on its phenotype and expression pattern as well as its structural similarities to NRAMPs and a nitrate transporter in Aspergillus nidulans, we discuss a possible role for MVL in nitrite/nitrate transport and its implications.     

X-ray microanalytical detection of iron in pigmentation of oral mucosa.

A patient was referred to the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital with a grey metallic pigmentation of the hard palate. Conventional histopathological examination was inconclusive, suggesting the presence of either an ephelis (freckle) of pigmentation resulting from a stainless steel upper denture. Material from the pathological specimen was dewaxed and reembedded in Spurr's resin. Examination in the TEM revealed electron dense deposits in the cytoplasm of macrophages. Energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis demonstrated that these inclusions contained iron. The results suggested that the iron was in a form similar to haemosiderin and had arisen from the steel denture.     

Dynamics of calmodulin in cerebral structures under the action of modulated UHF electromagnetic fields]

The influence of modulated UHF-electromagnetic fields (low intensity) on calmodulin levels in several brain structures was studied. It was shown that UHF-electromagnetic fields influence calmodulin levels in the hypothalamus and sensorimotor cortex. Its effect depends on modulation regimes.     

The expression of plasmalemma transcobalamin-II receptors on human blood lymphocytes stimulated by mitogens]

The influence of mitogens on the expression of surface membrane TC-II receptors of human blood lymphocytes and internalization of (TS-II+57Co-CNCbl) complex into cytoplasm were investigated. Mature lymphocytes have a very small number of surface receptors to plasma TC-II but their expression is increased significantly by PHA or Con-A stimulation. CBl transport to cytoplasma is activated in definite sequence by two different mechanisms. Stimulated cells take free CBl without participation of TC-II in early hours of mitogen action (12-42 hrs) before maximal 3H-thymidine incorporation into DNA. On day 3 of cultivation, specific mechanism of CBl transport triggers and the number of lymphoblast receptors is increased manifold. Radioactive CBl enters cytoplasma due to interaction of TC-II-CN [57Co] CBl of the medium with surface membrane receptor of the cells. Thus, the definition of TC-II receptors as an important functional parameter may serve a marker of proliferating cells.     

Effects of low intensity infra-red laser irradiation on ultrastructure and proliferation of liver cells in experimental hepatitis and cirrhosis]

With the aid of light, electron transmission and scanning electron microscopy and radioautography and stereometry, the influence of low-intensive laser irradiation (LILI) (infrared) was studied in normal rat liver and in experimental cirrhosis and hepatitis. It was revealed that arsenide-gallium laser irradiation causes the change of intracellular structure. These changes show the intensification on their specific function manifest in an increase of relative volume of intracellular structures. The changes of microvessels show the activation of microcirculation. The elevation of the index of the labelled nuclei testify to increased proliferation. The similar influences of LILI on the liver ultrastructure and proliferation in hepatitis and cirrhosis are accompanied by the reduction of the pathological changes of the liver--the hepatocytes oedema, granular, vacuolar and fatty dystrophy.     

The immunostimulating properties of cholecystokinin octapeptide and its fragments]

Immunostimulating properties of cholecystokinin octapeptide (CCK-8) were evaluated in experiments on adult normal and thymectomized mice, in vitro. It was shown that CCK-8 stimulates IgM-PFC production to SRBC, but does not change the immune response to Vi-antigen. CCK-8 increases the number of Thy-I+ spleen T cells and restores thymus-dependent immune response in thymectomized mice. CCK-8 has no effect on neutrophil phagocytosis activity in vitro. The immunostimulating activity of CCK-8 is related mainly to C-terminal fragment (identical to pentagastrin tetrapeptide) since the N-terminal CCK-8 tetrapeptide displays negligible effect in all tests.
